Aguardente - definitely for the very brave! Keep lighted matches out of reach.
Amarguinha - made from almonds.
Brandy - good local brands.
Brandymel - a mixture of brandy and honey.
Bagaciera - Portuguese white brandy.
Fernet Branca - another Portuguese brandy.
Ginja - a sweet cherry liquor..
Medronho - local home-brewed firewater!!! Normally kept hidden from view and stored in a normal looking water bottle!
Tijuana - a coffee liquor, similar to Tia Maria.
Triplesec - an orange liquor, similar to Cointreau.
Wines
Lagoa - locally produced in the town of Lagoa.
Mateus Rose - one of the most famous wines from the region.
Port - available as a white for an aperitif, or tawny as an after-dinner drink.
Vinho Verde - a green wine, sparkling and refreshing. An Algarve speciality.
All Portuguese wines served in bars and restaurants are generally of a good quality. Ask for Tinto (red) or Branco (white).
